University of Brigant Achieves DEAC Candidacy Status
The University of Brigant is honoured to announce its candidacy status with the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, transparent governance, and rigorous quality standards across every programme we offer — from undergraduate certificates through to doctoral research.
Candidacy represents the first formal step in the DEAC accreditation process. During this stage, independent evaluators review institutional policies, faculty qualifications, student support services, learning outcomes, and the integrity of our assessment systems. Brigant has spent more than two years preparing comprehensive documentation, strengthening quality assurance processes, and aligning our academic operations with DEAC's published standards for distance education institutions.
For prospective students, candidacy status signals that Brigant operates under external scrutiny and continuous improvement expectations. While candidacy is not the same as full accreditation, it confirms that our institution meets the threshold requirements to pursue accreditation and that we are actively engaged in the multi-year evaluation cycle that leads to full recognition.
Our academic leadership team has established a dedicated Accreditation Steering Committee chaired by the Provost. The committee coordinates evidence collection, faculty development, and student outcome reporting. Regular internal audits ensure that programme learning outcomes, rubrics, and capstone assessments remain aligned with published syllabi and that academic integrity policies are enforced consistently across all schools.
Students enrolled during the candidacy period will receive clear communication about our accreditation timeline. Transcripts and degree certificates issued by Brigant include candidacy disclosures as required by DEAC, and our admissions team provides accurate information to applicants about the status of each programme. We believe transparency builds trust — particularly for international learners who depend on accurate institutional representation when planning their careers.
The candidacy announcement also coincides with expanded student services. Brigant has invested in 24/7 library access, enhanced writing centre appointments, and a new peer mentoring programme pairing experienced doctoral candidates with first-year master's students. These investments directly address DEAC's emphasis on student success resources in distance education.
Faculty development remains a centrepiece of our preparation. All teaching staff complete annual training in online pedagogy, inclusive assessment design, and the ethical use of generative AI in academic work. Department chairs conduct peer reviews of module content each term, and external subject-matter experts review new programme proposals before launch.
Looking ahead, Brigant expects to host a DEAC site visit within the next eighteen months. The visit will include interviews with students, faculty, and administrators, as well as a review of learning management systems, financial stability, and graduate employment data. We welcome this scrutiny as an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of our academic community.
We thank our students, alumni, faculty, and partners for their patience and support throughout this process. Candidacy status is not an endpoint — it is a commitment to ongoing excellence. The University of Brigant will continue to publish quarterly accreditation updates on this news portal and through direct communications to enrolled students.
