Academic Gaelic and Scots in higher education—communication practice, not a folklore elective.
Online or on campus

Higher education in Scotland still defaults to English even where policy mentions Gaelic and Scots. This MA treats that gap as a professional communication problem: style guides, assessment literacy, and the ethics of representing speech communities you may not belong to. You will edit a paper, design bilingual student-facing text, and justify orthographic choices. Dual pathway matters because many Gaelic-medium and Scots-using professionals are not in Edinburgh every week. They still sit the same identity-checked assessments. Faculty will not pass a portfolio that only pastes a few Gàidhlig words onto an English essay. The degree does not appoint you to a language board and it does not certify interpreter status. Applicants without prior Gaelic or Scots study must submit the extra evidence the page lists, or choose a different programme. Capstones are communication portfolios for a named public or educational setting. University of Brigant will not pass English-only work with a decorative header in Gàidhlig. Extra language evidence is an admissions fact, not a marketing flavour. Online students must access lawful readings under the same licence rules as campus readers in Edinburgh. The MA sits beside Ofqual-facing honesty elsewhere in the catalogue: do not claim a regulated language qualification this award is not. MA Gaelic and Scots Academic Communication is taught as one award, not a list of unrelated modules. The published length is 18 months, and the credit total is 36. Students move from Gaelic, Scots, and English in Scottish Public Life through Gaelic, Scots, and English in Scottish Public Life; Representation, Community, and Extractive Language Work; Orthography, Register, and Audience; Abstracts, Feedback, and Examiner Language; Bilingual VLE and Handbook Practice; Research Writing across Three Language Resources, and finish on Writing for Senior Public and Academic Audiences. Each course has a question, a method, and a submission. In this field, students justify a marketing decision with evidence rather than a slogan. Reading is a brief, a channel note, and a measurement plan. The artefact a marker expects is a campaign or content recommendation with audience, channel, and measure. The award is built so that a graduate can do the following in practice: Produce academic and student-facing text with justified Gaelic/Scots/English choices Edit for register without mocking Scots or tokenising Gaelic Explain language-policy instruments as a communicator, not as a board appointee Teaching assumes the student can read a source, attempt a problem before the seminar, and revise after feedback. Attendance at live seminars is part of the design. The capstone or final course must use the methods of the earlier courses; a project that ignores them does not pass. The pages for each course name the topics that are examined. Those topics are the syllabus. A brochure line is not a substitute for them.
Thirty-six credits: language policy and ethics, academic genres in Gaelic and Scots, pedagogy and public communication, and a supervised portfolio. Dual pathway. Extra language evidence as published.

By the end, students can justify a marketing decision with evidence rather than a slogan, using Gaelic, Scots, and English in Scottish Public Life as the working context rather than a generic management example. Second, they apply the method to a case, dataset, text, or design and compare it with a weaker alternative. Third, they revise the work after feedback and state what the conclusion cannot support. Preparation uses a brief, a channel note, and a measurement plan. Seminar time is for the decision, not for reading the materials aloud. Assessment is a campaign or content recommendation with audience, channel, and measure. A pass requires a clear method, evidence a marker can check, and an explicit limit.
